HOME BY HARLAN COBEN

It’s been 10 years since the criminals kidnapped 2 boys from rich families and demanded a huge amount of money for their release. Then, they just vanished, and the boys were nowhere to be found. For a whole decade, the two families had to struggle with unbearable memories and hope that one day a miracle will happen and the kids will come back to them. And that day is finally here! One of the kids, who’s now a full-grown teenager, is said to be found. The biggest questions are – where did the kidnappers take him, what has he been […]

Chromebooks get stable Android apps as Andromeda rumors swirl

Andromeda may be the future, but Android and Chrome OS are already merging. Google just made Android apps available on the stable version of Chrome OS for the first time, and organizations can now centrally manage Android apps on their Chromebooks.

Stable Chromebooks get Android apps

Yes, certain Chromebooks got Android apps and the Google Play Store a little while back. But that was only in the unstable developer versions of Chrome OS. As of Chrome OS version 53.0.2785.129, the Google Play Store and Android apps are now available on the stable version of Chrome OS.

However, they’re only available on the Acer Chromebook R11 and Asus Chromebook Flip. They should hopefully be available on the stable version of the Chromebook Pixel (2015) soon, too, but aren’t yet. Google hasn’t given a reason for the delay, so hopefully support isn’t too far off.

On these devices, you’ll now find an Enable Google Play Store option in the Settings application without switching over to developer builds. The Google Play Store itself is still considered beta, but it works on a stable version of Chrome OS.

This is just a first step to rolling out Android apps, which will arrive on many other Chromebooks later in 2016 and 2017. With Google’s developers stabilizing the feature, they can begin bringing it to new hardware.

Google Play on the ASUS Chromebook Flip.
With Google axing Chrome apps, Android apps will be even more important on Chrome OS.

Administrators can centrally manage Android apps on Chromebooks

Meanwhile, Google has also updated the Google Apps Management console with some new, relevant features. Organizations like schools and businesses can use this to centrally manage their Chromebooks.

Under Device Management Chrome User Settings Google Play Apps, administrators will now find options to centrally manage whether the Play Store is enabled, which accounts are allowed to be used in the Android environment, whether apps can be installed from “unknown sources,” and whether security certificates from the Chrome OS environment are also made available to Android apps.

We’d expect to see more options here in the future, such as a way to “force-install” Android apps on Chromebooks just like Chrome apps and extensions can be “force-installed” on Chromebooks today.

Waterfalls & Waterslides On Taveuni Island

Taveuni Rainforest Fiji

The Garden Island

Taveuni Island, Fiji

I was unprepared for just how beautiful Taveuni island would be. A mountainous landscape covered by tropical rainforest and plenty of hidden waterfalls to explore.

Nicknamed “The Garden Island” due to the incredible amount of vegetation you’ll find there, Taveuni is the 3rd largest of Fiji’s 300+ islands. Compared to others it has very little development.

A majority of Taveuni’s flora fauna are protected by two nature preserves and a national park.

Visiting is usually accomplished in a small propeller plane, and doing so allows you to see Fiji’s numerous colorful islands from the air. This is a worthwhile experience in itself. Taveuni’s Matei Airport is just a shack with a few benches under a roof acting as a terminal.

Local Kids Fiji

Fijian Kids on Taveuni

Taveuni Island Villages

The indigenous population of Taveuni survives by growing coconut, kava, breadfruit, cassava, vanilla, and coffee on small plots of family land to feed themselves and earn an income.

Villages are made up of small wooden homes with metal roofs. Sometimes corrugated metal is used to build the whole structure.

Clothelines hang outside each dwelling — although with all the rain and humidity the island gets, it must take days to dry anything this way.

Roads on Taveuni are rough and muddy. In some places streams small rivers were flowing right over them. We passed local kids who enthusiastically waved as our 4×4 van crawled it’s way to the Eastern end of the island to visit the national park.

Bouma National Park

In addition to farming small plots of land, tourism is also an increasing source of income for local residents of Taveuni. Nearby villages share revenues from the entry fee that tourists pay for a visit Bouma National Park in order to trek to it’s hidden jungle waterfalls.

Joined by my friends JD, Lesley, Ryan, Stephanie, and our guide Atu, we entered the park and began marching up a wide path of thick grass absolutely teeming with frogs. They hopped out from under our feet in the drizzling rain.

Small patches of taro grew on steep inclines next to the trail. If you’ve never heard of taro, it’s an important root crop with large heart-shaped leaves and reddish stems commonly grown on Pacific islands.

After cooking it to remove toxins, you can eat it’s roots and leaves. Island nations have been surviving on it for hundreds of years.

Taro grows well on Taveuni, and 80% of Fiji’s supply comes from the island.

Bouma Waterfall Fiji

Famous Bouma Waterfall

Waterfall Hike

The rainforest landscape in Bouma National Park is a feast for the eyes ears. Vibrant red ginger flowers stand out in stark contrast to the copious amounts of green.

Exotic island birds like the orange dove, wood pigeon, and Taveuni parrot serenaded us as we marched.

A series of beautiful waterfalls can be reached while hiking in Bouma National Park. The first one is called Bouma falls, and it’s probably Fiji’s most famous waterfall. It’s quite impressive at 24 meters (78 ft.) tall.

We stopped here for 30 minutes to take a dip in the refreshing Tavoro river water. But I’m not happy until I can find something to jump from…

Tavueni Waterfalls Fiji

Waterfall Number Two

Wet Slippery Trails

Fortunately you can climb the rocks behind the Bouma waterfall and leap off a 5 meter (15 ft.) cliff into the pool below. The loud pillar of cascading water creates a cloud of mist that helped cool us off.

For the next leg of the hike we climbed higher into the mountains while looking back at fantastic views of the ocean, nearby Qamea Island, and local villages down in the valley. The trail got progressively steeper, muddier, and narrower as we pushed on to the second waterfall.

A fork in the trail took us down a very slippery path that led to the 2nd waterfall. We jumped in for another swim of course!

Purple freshwater crabs scurried over the rocks.

Natural Water Slide Fiji

Tell Me This Doesn’t Look Fun?

Waitavala Waterslide

Rather than continue on to the 3rd waterfall, we decided to leave Bouma and visit a natural waterslide located on another section of the island. The Waitavala river is a favorite local hangout for Fijian kids.

We’re all just a bunch of big kids as well, so we had to check it out.

Basically it’s a 50 meter (150 ft.) section of river with small waterfalls and smooth rock chutes that you can slide down like a waterslide. And it’s fast! There are even banked turns on this thing.

The local kids are pros, they were actually barefoot surfing down sections of it standing up!

As for the rest of us, we left with plenty of bruises. But it was incredibly fun nonetheless. ★

Swimming With Bulls: Shark Diving In Fiji

Shark Diving in Fiji

Descending to Shark Dive in Fiji

Beqa Island, Fiji

Shark diving without a cage. Sounds insane, right? That’s what I thought too. Turns out sharks aren’t the terrifying monsters we think they are.

For millions of years sharks have slowly evolved into nature’s most deadly assassins. Lethal eating machines with razor sharp teeth, lightning-quick speed, and an unquenchable thirst for human blood!

(Ok, I made that last part up.)

But we’ve all seen the movie “Jaws” — and Hollywood doesn’t lie. It’s why thousands of people around the world suffer from Selachophobia. Fear of sharks.

But who can blame them? Why on earth would any rational person swim in the ocean not knowing what man-eating creatures may lurk beneath the waves?

As for those who purposefully seek out the company of sharks — they clearly have a death wish.

Tropical Fish Beqa Fiji

Fiji’s Magical Underwater World

Seeking The Company Of Sharks

As an adrenaline junkie, my tolerance level these days is high. Luckily Fiji delivered the goods. They have a Shark Reef Marine Reserve located off the coast of the island of Beqa, where you can go swimming with up to 8 species of shark.

To help finance shark research and compensate local villagers for their lost fishing grounds, Beqa Adventure Divers offers scuba diving trips into the marine reserve’s shark-infested waters.

They let you get face-to-face with these underwater killers.

Killers of fish that is.

Because shark attacks on humans around the world are exceedingly rare — despite popular belief to the contrary.

Shark Attack Odds

Let’s look at some examples. How likely is a shark attack in the United States? Odds are greater that one of these will happen to you first:

  • You will die from a dog attack.

  • You will die from a lightning strike.

  • You will get killed by bees or wasps.

  • You will be executed for a crime.

  • You will be bitten by a human.

  • You will die falling down in your home.

  • Dick Cheney will shoot you on a hunting trip.

As for actual death by shark attack, that’s even rarer. Like 1 in 3,748,067 to be exact. You are more likely to die while digging a sand hole on the beach.

So stop digging those stupid things. They’re dangerous!

Scuba Diving with Sharks Fiji

Cue Music from “Jaws”

My First Shark Dive

Knowing these statistics made it a bit easier to join the professionals at Beqa Adventure for my first ever shark dive. They’ve been doing this for over 10 years with no problems.

I’ve been scuba diving in caves before, but diving with large Bull and possibly Tiger sharks was a big deal. These massive animals can grow 8 to 15 feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds.

Both have a history (however rare) of attacks on humans.

I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t nervous to dive with them.

But, as I’ve learned over over again on my travels, breaking out of your comfort zone is a healthy thing to do. So down I went down below to meet these toothy phobia-inducing creatures in person.

Grey Reef Shark Beqa Fiji

Grey Reef Shark Posing for the Camera

Shark Diving Fiji

It was time to suit up and hop off the boat for a 100 foot descent into the ocean. Once at the bottom, local Fijian dive masters positioned us on top of a coral wall, looking down into a sandy pit. Then the feeding began. There was no turning back now!

Two divers pull fish parts from plastic containers attracting a gigantic whirling mass of Jacks, Snappers, and other reef fish. It wasn’t long before the sharks appeared to get in on the action. First it was Nurses, Black Tips, and Grey Reef sharks. At 4 to 6 feet long, they were impressive enough.

But then came the Bulls. Ten foot 400 pounders with menacing teeth.

Most of the big guys kept their distance from us, but just watching their huge forms maneuver through the water was an awe-inspiring sight.

After about 17 minutes of sharky fun, we ascended to a depth of 30 feet to continue the spectacle of motion. Black Tips, White Tips, Grey Reefs, and Nurses swam just a foot or two away from my face among hundreds of colorful red, blue, and yellow reef fish.

Our dive masters used aluminum poles to keep some overly excited sharks from getting too close.

Shark Feeding Controversy

Now if you didn’t already know, feeding sharks like this is a bit controversial. Some say that it trains them to associate humans with food, increasing the odds of an attack. Yet there is zero hard proof of this yet. It’s only speculation.

These diving trips pour much needed money into shark conservation research projects. Without that money, shark populations around the world will continue to rapidly decline. If dive operators don’t pay to help save the sharks, who will? You? The government?

That’s wishful thinking in my opinion. It won’t happen.

The ONLY reason marine life is protected at Fiji’s Shark Reserve is because of the money flowing in from these dive trips. Beqa Adventure Divers teamed up with local villages to ban all fishing here in 2004. The result? A once dying reef is thriving and full of life again.

After over 10 years of feeding sharks here, attacks in Fiji are still just as rare as anywhere else. Averaging 1-2 a year.

It’s important to keep in mind that swimming with sharks is probably a bit more dangerous than watching them on the Discovery Channel.

But don’t fall for all the media sensationalism. Math doesn’t lie. The odds are in your favor. These beautiful and powerful creatures are better seen in person anyway. ★

30 Popular Medium Length Haircuts with Bangs

Medium-length haircuts are simpler to style than long or short haircuts, even while they still provide a lot freedom for experiments and variety. Which haircut to pick? That’s your choice, we will only help you, to show what’s trendy and cool, what’s versatile and what’s convenient. How can you come up with a mix of all the three? You certainly can. You will discover some bright samples in pictures below.

What exactly Shoulder-Length Hairstyles are Most Favored in 2016

  • Bob haircuts. These are certainly not out of trend since they are convenient and fit most face shapes, dependent on the selected length. There will be a shorter or longer bob with a blunt cut or perhaps asymmetric side bang, use a center or side parting. In case your face is square, don’t ever choose a bob that ends up at your chin line, just let it be longer.

  • Layered, graded shoulder-length haircuts. These haircuts are really advantageous for curly hair, since they create a few beautiful volume and also show your curls in the great light. When you hair is relaxed, a layered haircut may also look good on you, thanks to choppy ends that organize a sort of сute innovative mess on your head.

How to Choose a Haircut Based on Your Face Shape?

Round faces take advantage of any asymmetry, since it creates lines, lengthening a round face. Apply asymmetric bangs or maybe thing choppy bangs, a side parting and also curls, covering cheeks. Stay away from thick blunt cut bangs.

Square faces have to shy away from the haircuts, end at the chin line. A few asymmetry is accepted. Almost all broad faces, round or even square ones, look good with curls.

Triangular faces may seem oval with haircuts, producing volume in the area of your cheeks and also chin. Layered hairstyles with curly hair would be perfectly.

Rectangular faces ought to stay away from long length haircuts with straight hair. Lengthy locks along a rectangular face cause it seem even longer. Don’t put up much volume on top also. Curls and also waves are perfect for this shape also.

Oval faces are best faces, which means the shape. You can still wear no matter haircut you love and you’ll look wonderful for sure.
