“Clash Of Clans” has a new competitor in Aeria Games’ “Dawn Of Gods,” but it provides an experience all to its own. Its developers caught up with us to explain what makes this new strategy epic different from Supercell’s popular powerhouse.
In the simplest sense, “Dawn Of Gods” is a mobile real-time strategy game in which players build powerful armies largely controlled by gods. These gods compare to a hero unit in “Clash Of Clans” but with far more variety. In the game’s current build, there are over 150 different gods with their own special abilities. Several deities can be spawned by leveling up, and two powerful ones can even be combined to evolve into something more formidable.
In the developer’s own words, this makes for an “extensive system” that cannot be understated. Smaller troops exist to provide buffers, but leveraging multiple gods is truly the key to victory. It means having the chance to work with and fight against many strong forces in every single battle.
“Dawn Of Gods” seeks to defy its easy label as a “Clash Of Clans” clone in other ways as well. A huge difference between both titles is that “Gods” tries to offer players more freedom and depth with regard to play styles. Online raids are “the backbone” of the experience, with communities fighting for control over resources, but there’s also Arena and Alliance War too. Arena has short-burst daily matches, while Alliance is a larger weekly event focused on gobbling up territory as teams.
Options also exist for those that prefer to play offline. Conquest is an unconnected game type with computer-controlled opponents and a goal of taking over a world map. In these battles, resources can be earned that transfer to multiplayer. “We wanted to make a game that was deep enough for anyone to enjoy, no matter what their preferred style of play is,” said our development source.
Like its peers, “Dawn Of Gods” does feature microtransactions, but a mandate in the game’s design was players being able to “dictate their own experience” along those lines. Resource upgrades may become a necessity to those that want to stay heavily competitive, but that’s not the whole story. Those behind “Gods'” creation say that they “want casual players to feel competitive without having to worry about how often they log in or a pressure to spend money.” As such, payments are split amongst easily-defined packs that can be purchased as the user sees fit.
The surface of “Dawn Of Gods” may revolve around the RTS mainstays that have held the genre together for decades, but it attempts to accomplish a curious mobile feat by offering a level of depth and freedom most popularly found on a PC title. In other words, its atmosphere feels familiar, but there’s a lot of content for veterans and newcomers to dig into.
“Dawn Of Gods” is available now on iOS and Android as a free download.
