Clash Royale: Digital Card Game from Clash of Clans Maker

Mobile game maker Supercell has unveiled a new digital card game

Clash Royale

– as a follow-up to its immensely popular
Clash of Clans

. The card game is a real-time multiplayer one which features

characters from the
Clash of Clans

series.

The game was soft-launched on Apple Inc.’s
AAPL

iOS-based devices in Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Norway,

Denmark, Iceland, Finland and New Zealand. In fact, the game will

be launched in more countries depending on the response it

receives.

Notably, this launch marks Supercell’s venture into the popular and

lucrative space of online competitive card games.
Clash Royale

is thus set to face competition from the likes of
Rage of Bahamut

and
Marvel: War of Heroes

and Activision Blizzard, Inc.’s
ATVI

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

.

The game is free to download and offers in-app purchase feature.

However, details on its worldwide release and launch on other

platforms have not been disclosed.

Notably, this Finnish developer has had a series of successes in

mobile games like
Hay Day

and
Boom Beach

. However,
Clash of Clans

has turned out to be the developer’s largest hit. Launched in 2013,

the competitive multiplayer game is one of the most sought-after on

both iOS and Alphabet Inc.’s
GOOGL

Android-based devices.

Notably, in 2013, Supercell raked in $892 million in revenues,

largely on the success of
Clash of Clans

. Interestingly, it was Supercell’s rapid rise to fame that invited

investments from the likes of Japanese telecom giant SoftBank Group

Corp. – which is now a majority owner of the company.

SoftBank is the third largest wireless and Internet service

provider in Japan. Notably, the company has a strong presence in

the U.S. and is the majority owner and parent company of U.S.

telecom operator Sprint Corp.
S

.

Thus, the massive popularity of
Clash of Clans

had encouraged Supercell to launch a new game set in the Clash

universe. However,
Clash Royale

‘s litmus test will be the players’ response to the game.

Supercell believes that
Clash Royale

is the answer to the company’s endeavor of making an entertaining

and appealing player-versus-player game on mobile for long.

However, the game’s fate is yet to be decided which may taste the

same success as the other three hits from the company have or may

fail to make it beyond the soft-launch like
Smash Land

.
